If the Career Doesnt Fit, Dont Wear It

If the Career Doesnt Fit, Dont Wear It A few weeks ago, as I was preparing to get ready for my 2-week trip and multiple speaking engagements, I decided to get some new shirts. Understand that Im not a shopper (in general) and especially dont like buying clothes for myself. I went to Kohls and found this cool 60% off section for dress shirts.  I found 4 or them that I really liked, tried one on to make sure I was picking the right size, and then bought all four. I took them, still in their packaging, to my first hotel (in Dallas) where  I unpacked and ironed them. There was a problem with these very nice shirts, though.  They are fitted.  That means they are made for someone who has a body style with certain characteristics, most notably goes in at the waist.  In other words, it goes in where I um go out Fitted is NOT my style.  It was uncomfortable for me during my presentations (but my schedule was so tight I didnt have time to look for any shirts while on the road), and the way the shirts made me feel probably had a negative impact on my presentation. THE FIT WASNT GOOD. How many times do we try and force a fit in our career?  Maybe we think we can still fit into that industry, or that job, or with that boss, or that company? But the FIT just isnt good. You can try and make it work but it will be uncomfortable for you (and possibly have an impact on your work).  It will likely be uncomfortable for everyone around you. I had two real options with my shirt. I could either (a) keep working out and eat better and hope that one day I fit into my fitted shirts, or (b) I could get rid of them (try and return them or give to a fitted friend :p). I am choosing option (b).  No reason to clutter my life and closet with the shirts when I can get a better fitting shirt that feels good and Im comfortable in. How about you? If your career doesnt fit, how long do you live uncomfortably? Job Hunting - How to Create a Resume Definition

Job Hunting - How to Create a Resume DefinitionA resume definition is a document created by a professional writer, which includes a short description of the candidate, which must be enough to get a quick read on his profile. Such a document does not require too much time to create and is much cheaper than hiring a professional writer to produce one.It is true that most of us hire a writer to help us with the job because we feel it is very expensive and it takes great lengths to get the information in the right order. However, it is important to look at a simple alternative to do the job for you. With a resume definition, you can make an extremely well structured resume without spending anything at all.Your basic need when writing resumes is to outline everything that you are and what you do. In other words, the information should be filled up with details about yourself. It can be quite difficult to write such a document as there is no 'one size fits all' solution. Writing a resume d efinition for the first time will probably seem like an overwhelming task and will just turn out to be a complete waste of time. The trick is to follow these guidelines: First, know that your resume definition should only contain a few key things. Any resume or CV that has too many irrelevant details will make it difficult for the recruiter to make a proper assessment. A short summary about your experience will be enough.Second, remember that you need to give as little additional information as possible. It is not essential to include your educational qualifications as the recruiters do not have a time factor and would rather gather information in the first few minutes of meeting you. You must focus on some small things, but remember that these should not be the best detail.Third, it is recommended that you follow a format for your resume definition. It is important to not go overboard with writing a sentence too many times. The recruiter is looking for a brief description of your wo rk history and has to take some time to absorb it. One thing that you must never do is to cram information into a single line. Finally, a resume definition should be short and focused and highlight a high level of your work history. If you have more details, do not include them. It is important to make sure that you are able to get across to the reader what you expect to get out of the interaction. Remember that a recruiter would rather meet you in person. So, take a deep breath and follow these three simple guidelines to creating a resume definition. It will only take you a few minutes to prepare and you will be on your way to finding the right job in no time.

5 Ways the Cloud Makes Remote Workers Feel More Connected - Personal Branding Blog - Stand Out In Your Career

5 Ways the Cloud Makes Remote Workers Feel More Connected - Personal Branding Blog - Stand Out In Your Career Remote work is increasingly becoming a popular setup for both employees and businesses. Some onlookers are skeptical of the telecommuting model, wondering if these workers are productive and engaged. Even if remote workers do their duties, dont they feel lonely? Among non-self-employed populations, work-at-home options grew 115 percent since 2005, about 10 times faster than the rest of the workforce. At least half of the existing workforce holds jobs compatible with remote work. Remote workers may feel lonely sometimes, but theyre certainly not isolated from the world or their colleagues and employers. If anything, the cloud boosts interconnectivity. Remote Work Increases Wellness and Satisfaction on the Job Remote work allows 77 percent of employees to get more done and increase their job satisfaction as a result, ultimately reducing turnover rates. The statistics continue to work in favor of the remote workforce, their health and employers: 23 percent are open to working longer when off-site 35 percent better their exercise routines 32 percent eat healthier 45 percent get a better quality of sleep 53 percent experience reduced stress Remote work provides a healthy win-win situation for both employees and employers. With reduced stress levels and increased wellness, employees feel eager to give back to the employer. The prospect of working from home seems isolating at first, but it provides remote workers with more peace of mind. Here are five ways the cloud keeps remote workers connected to company work culture: Remote Workers Videoconference In theory, the only face a remote worker should see is their own in the mirror as they brush their teeth in the morning, but thats a myth. Videoconferencing enables employers to stay in contact with their remote workers and provide real-time support as they check in. The open-door policy is still alive and well. Only 13 percent of workers are engaged in work at traditional on-site jobs, and videoconference meetings let team members see each other, remain engaged and build company culture through the encouragement of collaboration. Where videoconferencing becomes the norm, remote workers jump aboard with collaborative efforts. Videoconference meetings are more likely to be to-the-point than typical meetings, boosting engagement levels by 87 percent, according to one study. Remote Workers Still Call As a part of their jobs, remote workers still make and receive phone calls, and they have their own extensions. Like videoconferencing, employers can check up on the employee with a quick call and employees may call the office with a question to clarify or if they feel sick. All elements of the traditional office havent been swept away â€" theyve simply improved with the ability of workers to get their jobs done remotely. Remote Workers Share an Office, Too Alone in a room, a remote worker types away at their keyboard, but theyre not lonely. In fact, remote workers share an office of sorts via a hosted virtual desktop: Telecommuters may access applications and files from any location worldwide, turn in work and chat. With streamlined user experiences, a worker logs into their workspace and gets to work in their shared space. The cloud is the most private office you could ask for as an employee while still having the capability to engage with others. Remote Workers Maintain a Social Presence Working remotely doesnt mean telecommuters are stuck at home staring at the same four walls. Remote workers may work out of a coffee shop or in a co-working space, but theyre not limited to these options for social engagement. Innovation thrives on social interaction and engagement in conversation. Remote workers maintain connected to the office with telepresence bots that give them a physical presence in the office. Pop-up chat windows encourage conversation along with phone calls and videoconferencing. Employers dont expect remote workers to stay at home and feel isolated. Remote Workers Share in the Mission In a traditional office, the mission statement might consist of lovely words grouped together on a piece of paper â€" a formality that symbolizes a code of conduct, but its much more for those who telecommute. Remote workers share in the mission every day they sit down, seemingly alone, to work. These words are encouraging and provide a touchstone of motivation for remote workers to do their best every day. Many assume the life of a telecommuter is lonely, but that’s not the case. Having the privacy of working remotely enables employees to place more meaningful thought into their duties. All the traditional elements of the office are there, from meetings to conference calls, but better â€" employees who work from home experience boosted levels of productivity, reduced stress levels and an increase of taking on healthier wellness habits. The cloud creates interconnectivity and boosts levels of employee engagement. While they may look lonely, remote workers are far from alone at home.

On the Job by Anita Bruzzese How to Find Time to Think Strategically

On the Job by Anita Bruzzese How to Find Time to Think Strategically We often lament were busier than ever at work, running from meeting to meeting, firing off e-mails and trying toget something done without an interruptionevery five minutes. In other words, who has time tothinkanymore? If you feel like youre always putting out fires instead of thinking about how to prevent them, youre not alone. But thats a trend that worries Rich Horwath, CEO of the Strategic Thinking Institute and author of Elevate: The Three Disciplines of Advanced Strategic Thinking. Companies that dont carve out time for managers to think individually and collectively about their key business issues simply wont exist anymore, he says. He explains that research shows that the No. 1 cause of bankruptcy is bad strategy, and companies like Blockbuster, Circuit City and Borders are living proof as they failed to adapt to the changing needs of customers relative to their competition, He says. If a leader doesnt schedule time tothink strategically, it simply isnt going to happen, he says. But the cost isnt felt just by billion-dollar companies. Horwath says that failing to think strategically canimpact our own careers, no matter our jobs. Specifically, many industries are continuing to reduce head count, which means that those who keep their jobs need to continually build their body of expertise to remain essential to the business and actively learn from your daily experience, he says. For example, each of your work experiences such as a meeting or teleconference or customer interaction provides a learning opportunity. Ask yourself, What was my takeaway/ learning/ insight? If youre not continuing to build your expertise through new insights, you are vulnerable to becoming obsolete, he warns. Still, even if we commit to being morestrategic in our own careers, that doesnt guarantee others will share our enthusiasm. For those such as project managers, that can cause a lot of headaches. Horwath says one way that project managers can gain a greater commitment from others to stick to a strategy is finding acommon groundor what youre both trying to achieve. Once that is achieved, then you can gain alignment on how to get there, he explains. Once youve identified the commonality in the goals, its helpful to establish milestones (see more here)

Creating a Coach Resume

Creating a Coach ResumeA coach resume is actually one of the most important documents you have to create. You are required to show that you can solve problems and solve them in a way that makes it as easy as possible for your new employer to hire you and get you a higher salary. That's why you have to be very careful when creating one.One of the main problems with a coach resume is that a lot of people create their resume with the intent of having it be used for many years to come. While this can certainly work, it will eventually backfire. Your potential employer is going to recognize that you wrote your resume with the intention of being used as soon as they see it.Your coach resume needs to be strong and make sure that it catches your potential employer's eye. In order to do this, you need to make sure that you use the right keywords and phrases. The best way to do this is to use software that will actually give you suggestions on how to write your resume. It's the best thing you can do because it will make it much easier for you to create the perfect resume for you. There are different topics that are best to use when creating a coach resume. First, you need to be aware of the professional experiences that you have and what are the most prominent things about these experiences. This will help to make sure that your coach resume focuses on the most important parts of your life. For example, if you have had many opportunities in sales, your coach resume may focus on that. One of the other parts of your coach resume that you need to pay attention to is your educational background. This is another part of your resume that can help you attract the attention of the employer that you are targeting. You should also make sure that you put your skills and certifications in the appropriate category. The last part of your coach resume that you need to focus on is your employable qualifications. These can include your certifications, experience, and certifications that you have obtained in the past. The only time you want to skip this part is if you are trying to write a coach resume for a job interview. You definitely don't want to put your certifications in there unless you are already well aware of the position that you are applying for.You need to make sure that your coach resume is professional and formal. Do not use any funny or casual words when you are writing your resume. Be sure that you utilize all of the terms that are necessary. For example, if you are applying for a sales position, you would write sales and manager instead of sales manager and sales.Make sure that you try to be as clear as possible with your resume and do not put too much information in there. Using the right keywords and phrases will help you achieve the goal of showing your potential employer that you are ready to take on the challenges of the job.

Tough (Question) Tuesday What are you resisting

Tough (Question) Tuesday What are you resisting fortune, originally uploaded by simple effulgence , found via kind over matter I started reading The War of Art on the subway today, after just 33 pages I know itll only be a matter of time before its dog-eared well-loved. The first part of the book is about resistance, how its the vampire that welcomes all of our vices so that we just wont start pursuing our dreams. Since Im asking it to myself, Id love to know: What are you resisting? Whether its tangible (leaving my job, writing a novel, dropping that friend) or intangible (resting, a great big laugh, feeling joyful), please share it in the comments section. Ill be right there with ya!
